Some clinicians I know have observed that a significant sub-population of children diagnosed with ADHD have also witnessed or directly experienced violence within the home. Is this merely a coincidence?
Based on 40 years as a BHC clinician I find a weak correlation between early adverse life events and ADHD. I think it is overly diagnosed. And one of the prime interventions is prescribing CNS stimulants that in the US are Schedule Two controlled agents.
An early dysfunctional or toxic psychosocial environment does impact attachment subtypes such as disorganized or rage-aggressive. We know the males tend to externalize trauma, while females internalize. Therefore, males are more likely to display disruptive behavior disorders that in part can mimic ADHD.
