I believe that good academic advising goes beyond making sure that the student understands the curriculum. A good advisor should help the student make decisions concerning his/her career. Students do not have the experience that an advisor has (both personally and from guiding other students), and thus can not effectively weigh how certain choices will affect their taken path towards their goal(s). Apart from the core requirements, some classes are more helpful than others towards achieving certain goals. Some students may be weak in certain topics/subjects/skills (e.g. English writing, mathematics, creative thinking), and an advisor should steer these students towards classes that strengthen these weaknesses, and even more so if they are important for the student’s final goal. Due to the more personal knowledge that the advisor has of the student, an advisor should also watch and detect sudden changes/inconsistencies that occur in the student’s academics. This may signal any number of problems that the student is going through, which can be addressed quickly and efficiently. In doing so the advisor can act as a “point person” for which other faculty members can bring their concerns to with regards to the student.

To put the above comments into perspective, I am speaking from my experience in liberal art colleges within the U.S., which tend to be smaller than universities (e.g. 2000 students) and highly student focused.

Good point Prof. Kirmani. An advisor can motivate the students to explore new topics that they would otherwise not consider. However, I feel that it is the role of the mentor and of the professor whose class is taken to excite students, open up their minds to new ideas, and encouraging them to be creative in their problem solving. In my experience, an academic advisor and a mentor play different roles, especially so for a research mentor. Often mentors take over the role of an academic advisor, and thus playing multiple roles in student lives. However, finding a mentor can take quite a while to do. Professor during their teaching of a course/lab can certainly motivate students and change how they approach topics and problem solving. Even without being an academic advisor or a direct mentor, many of my professors had a large impact on how I thought about topics and solved problems, regardless of the class’s subject matter.

Among the attitudes that should possess , cultivate and implement an academic advisor within your role model considered the following key :

1 - Must be open to change and committed person with his growing personal growth. So let him cultivate basic attitudes for his role as advisor , teacher and social person that is handled in the field of education , and as such is a role model .

2 - The most important attitudes to be cultivated are: empathy , willingness for cooperation and mutual aid , commitment , responsiveness , authenticity, creativity, self- criticism, sensitivity , perseverance, self- determination , honesty and fairness .

3 - Analogous to the case of attitudes, the assessor must be clear on the values ​​that should support such attitudes, such as respect for their peers and the recognition of the rights of students , the role of the educator in value transformation society, committed systematic addition to the pursuit of excellence work.

An interesting question. Very relevant too, for in some parts of the developing world, academics at least in a middle class sense, has come to be viewed as a tool to secure jobs and regrettably, just about that. We find a crop of teachers (if I may use this term, instead of Academics) who not only have become teachers because they were looking for a job, but who do not posses some of the attributes that Dr Gonzalo referred to - empathy, sensitivity, etc.

A point that I would like to add here comes from an old Indian tradition. The tradition of 'Guru Kul', in which a guru (teacher) took the complete charge of the students, not merely imparting academic knowledge and skills, but also imparting social and spiritual skills and attributes. In the course of years of studying with the guru, the individual student not only equips himself to acquire skills for a profession, but also gains an inner sight that helps him to develop into a good human being. Alas, such systems have vanished with time!

In our enthusiasm to find monetarily rewarding 'careers', many societies have actually taken to replicating education models from developed countries without suitably internalizing them in a way that our social identities remain grounded in our inheritance. This is where teachers can play a crucial role in not only imparting knowledge but also act, by their own example, as the guides for building character that is so essential for good citizenship.

In brief, in my opinion, an academic adviser is not merely someone who equips a student with subject knowledge, but one who helps him in living life as a good human being by acquiring the right attitudes.

Mr. Ahmad, the advices of the academic activities is among the most important and valuable step from a successful development of the academic career of the staff at the Higher Education. In this respect valuable are only those recommendations, however, which are provided from the site of academic staff with outstanding contributions in the field of the education and science. Unfortunately, have Institutions world-wide, particularly Germany, where exsist such function 'akademischer rat'. But these positions are occupied from among the less ranking academics. Unisally young peoples without any experience with the field of the science and the education. Peoples with limited numbers of publication activities and horarium as lecturers and/or assistents. In this respect the an advice from a professor with world established academic reputation contributs more to the career of the young staff than, than the advices of a freshly graduated PhD students, achieving position for 'Academic Adviser'. It is very important to specify, which are the criteria for such position, for example in your country. Because of for different countries they are different. For German Educationa System, particularly, such positions are fully non-useful. In Bulgarian Higher Educational one such position does not exist. The academic advices are provided directly by the professors.
