I like to know which stage of rice plant has more nitrogen uptake efficiency? and what factors contribute most to improve uptake efficiency? Also, are there any contributions of young roots or older roots?
Actually, I could n`t get any reference in rice, though I got in case of tree species like apple and found that young roots has more uptake efficiency than older roots.
I will really appreciate any helps.
Nashir you have raised a relevant issue , but I wonder in a short term crop like rice , you can get any distinction between root efficiency contributing towards uptake of nitrogen . Indirectly , we compute nitrogen uptake at different crop phonological stages to give fair idea about the uptake efficiency vis-a-vis crop stages , or nitrogen uptake efficiency vis-a-vis root activity. Growth stages like tillering and grain filling stages are very critical with regard to ensuring the maximum grain yield. And , indirectly these relate to age of the plant vis-a-vis root activity as a function of merismatic tissue activity of the roots.

Dear A.K. Srivastava, root efficiency of rice is being studied on Phosphorus uptake by several researchers. So, I guess It might be possible in case of nitrogen. Although, my experiment based is based on shoot dry weight and N-concentration
Yes , Nashir , root efficiency means root configuration vis-à-vis phosphorous uptake is a very chronic area of study . We are more interested , how the nutrient ( Nitrogen for example ) uptake efficiency is partitioned across different crop physiological stages. Such an attempt will lead to tailor nutrient demand-driven fertilizer application, a big leap towards saving fertilizer inputs .
Dear Mr.Nashir,In the initial years of green revolution in India there was lot of interest in determining growth curve and nutrient uptake pattern in rice.It was observed that there was greater uptake of nitrogen in tillering and panicle initiation stages.The concept of split application has come from the growth and nutrient uptake studies .Application of N in three splits-at basal,tillering and panicle initiation has become very popular technology in rice cultivation.With in the three splits also there were variations depending on initial soil N availability before transplantation,establishment of seedlings and growth stage requirement .Initially if the soil N is low basal dose can be more.If the soil has residual N and the establishing seedlings N requirement is less, the basal dose can be reduced.Otherwise there will be loss N through volatilization and some nitrate leaching is also possible.After the seedling establishment and during the tillering stage the demand for N will increase.So some scientists recommended more N application at tillering stage.At panicle development stage again there will be greater demand for N.So with the split application of N, one can control the rate of application at each stage and also water management during crop growth will help to efficiently use applied N in rice.Now, we have the new methods of rice growing like SRI and aerobic rice.In these systems the age of seedling (not in direct sown rice),spacing, water management and fertilizer nutrient management are different.

Thanks for your detailed explanation on nitrogen uptake patterns with various growth stages. And my interest lies on more precise uptake patterns with very short growing period e.g. 7 days interval.
Do you have any idea on nitrogen uptake patterns with 7 days interval from the sowing to maturity.
Actually, I did an experiment on nitrogen uptake patterns in 7 days interval at seedling stages and found that very early stages e.g. 7 days seedlings can uptake more nitrogen and produce more dry weight than 14 and 21 days seedlings. I like to discuss this results
Dear Nashir,It is difficult to get papers with weekly sampling and analysis of dry matter and nutrient uptake.In most of the studies sampling is done at a particular growth stage.However, I came cross a paper published in Agronomy Journal with weekly sampling but I could not see full paper as it copyright protected.J.L.Sims and G.A.Place Growth and nutrient uptake of rice at different growth stages and nitrogen levels Agronomy Journal vol 60,no.6,p 692-696.

The question you asked is very logical.
From my experienced, nitrogen uptake efficiency pattern in rice increases from heading stage (HD) to maturity stage (MAT). But there is no much difference between twenty days after heading (20HD) and MAT.

Sir, the NUE increases upto the initiation of reproductive stage of rice, after that the uptake of Nitrogen decrease as Nitrogen is a moblie element in both plant and soil it will move from older part of plant to newer plant part, reproductive structure, that why the efficiency of Nitrogen decreases after initiation of reproductive stage.

The attached paper by Peng and Cassman (1998) best answers your question. They have reported that recovery efficiency (by difference method) of top-dressed urea during peak demand periods of rice such as panicle initiation could be as high as 78 %.
