When two different materials having a different thermal expansion coefficient are put together to form a metal matrix composite, if the particle is having a lower thermal expansion coefficient than the matrix, after solidification which one of the two would be having higher residual stress either matrix/reinforcement? any chances for the accumulation of compressive stress?

The mismatch in thermal expansion coefficient will surely lead to residual stresses in both matrix and reinforcement. You could run a simple simulation in Abaqus, Ansys or any other software to work out the residual stresses.

In general, Residual stresses are concentrated in the interface region between Matrix and reinforcement. It is irrespective of the shape, size and volume. However, the residual stress in MMCs is depended on the reinforced particulates sizes, shapes and volume.
Volume: A higher cooling rate, as well as a higher volume fraction of particles, induce higher residual stress in the matrix.
Shape: Sharp-Corner particles are causing higher residual stress than in spherical shape.
Next, the residual stress in the particle is compressive due to the lower thermal expansion coefficient and subsequently causes tensile stress in the matrix.
