General relationship between strength and hardness

Abstract

Both hardness and strength are the important properties of materials, and they often obey the three times empirical relationship in work-hardened metals and some bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). But the relationships between strength and hardness are quite different for those coarse-grained (CG) and ultrafine-grained materials, brittle BMGs and ceramics. In the present work, some Cu alloys with different microstructures, Zr-, Co-based BMGs and Al2O3 were employed to analyze the general relationship between hardness and strength. Several different relationships could be gotten from the experimental results of different materials available, and three types of indentation morphologies were observed.

Ductility measures the amount of plastic deformation that a material goes through by the time it breaks.

📷Ductility is said to be the property of a material to stretch without getting damaged. Metals having ductile property can be stretched into wires. An example is copper wire.

There is some ratio between hardness and ductility. For example Ductility=-0,23HB+67,6%. HB - Brinell hardness. But this equation can be applied only for one pipe steel. (09Г2С Russian steel).

I think there are some other equations for other steels.

All properties of steel for example are increasing when carbon content or some types of heat treatments is made such as through-hardening process (strength, hardness, ....) except ductility decreased and can be improved by tempering.
