Impinger bottles are used at some applications, where the gas is cooled and the condensate is dissolved in a solvent contained in the impingers. I have always seen impingers made of glass. Why not a metal? Lets say I have toluene vapour in nitrogen gas stream, and i send this stream through impingers that contain n-hexane. The impingers are kept in a ice-salt mixture bath. If metal impingers are used in the place of glass, will there be any issue?
There is of course the convenient wide availability of glass frits of different porosity and diameters. But let's assume you can get what you want out of porous metal; or maybe you just want large bubbles and don't need porosity at all.
There is still the issue of periodically cleaning your impinger. When the gas stops flowing, liquid from your vessel will slowly back up into it. Whatever "crap" you have in your solution will deposit in the frit or on the inside walls of the tube. If it's made of glass you can remove it with harsh chemical cleaners such as strong hot oxidizers. If it's metal you are more limited.
Provided you considered the cleaning I don't see why you shouldn't use metal.
Dear Ananthanarasimhan J. , I totally agree Emanuel Cooper and also I would like to add that glass impingers allow you to see the liquid level and the gas flow by the bubbling process, so it let you see if it is working properly.
