The attitude of academia and industry towards each other is quite indifferent, ingeneral, have low confidence in academia for the solution of their industrial problems.
The competence of faculty, preparedness for integration into the knowledge revolution needs to be analysed. The institutions must foster collaborative teaching and research with strong industry interface. There is also much need for innovative in curriculum design and delivery system .
years ago, I took part in a research project looking at possibilities for univ - IT-firm collaboration in an IT-cluster. we found very limited collaborations. A follow-up study indicated that one problem was differences in time-frames. Univ researchers needed at least six months to start and had a hard time focussing on one project on a project due to other obligations, funding, etc, whereas companies wanted to start right away and go all in. major management consulting firms can throw in 50 qualified consultants in a week working on just one problem, something that university researches cannot match
second, in my field of organisation theory, much of what is done is (more or less rightly) perceived as far to abstract, theoretical and irrelevant by industrial practitioners. how do you convince them that it is a good idea to apply postmodern Foucaldian governmentality perspectives to solve industrial problems?
third, university incentive structures make it less interesting for researchers to take on practical change programs: all that counts is publishing articles in international journals and you can hardly get funding for practical change programs.
The industry does not compensate academia for the same input, what they would pay to a consultant -professional. Perhaps it is the difference of confidence exhibited, or lack of knowledge on stating terms! If Teachers become professionals, then would they still be teachers?
When teachers are not adequately compensated, the motivation is lost. The teachers who acquire required skills are seen to remain no good.
Consultancy is like diagnosing ailment. Unless you scare the patient, prescribe plethora of tests, and advice a consulting programme.
the alternative of prescribing apt solution which is cheap ==== Job well done, and wait for thanks.
