I am looking to design and analyse an optimal vertical pressure vessel. What is the optimal design of a pressure vessel for a specific application, taking into consideration factors such as material selection, vessel geometry, and support structure, as analyzed through both design and finite element analysis (FEA) simulations?

In the case when the uncertainties in the characteristics of the pressure vessel system are considered, the problem becomes a stochastic problem. An approach known as "Stochastic Subset Optimization" is helpful for this optimization problem.

By optimal design we usually mean "lowest cost, fit for purpose" design. This is how suppliers compete in the market place. The design must be code compliant as a starting point. This sets the outline parameters but not the choice of materials and fabrication methods. A key feature is also the nozzles and doors that penetrate the vessel, usually not in the control of the supplier. A good starting point is to aim for the minimum acceptable diameter for the application of the vessel, as the smaller the diameter the lower the price. Once diameter and volume are selected (or specified) the alternative materials can be assessed. Models are good tools, but cannot resolve issues like weldability, PWHT and welding skills needed.
