It is possible to use a commercial KIT of fluorescent dyes, Live/Dead, for example, Baclight(TM) for calculation of living and dead cells in a luminescent microscope. Compare these quantity with total cell number of the bacteria counted in the count camera and with quantity of colonies (CFU/ml).
The result for detection of dormant cells will be clear to you.
Examples of use of a method with Live/Dead for nonculturable dormant cells you will find in our works: in book “Biochemistry and Biotechnology: Research and Development”, New York, “Nova Science Publishers, Inc.”, 2012, p. 45-50, chapter “Experimental approach to the induction of nonculturable state of Lactococcus lactis”, also in Journal “Voda: khimia I ekologia” (“Water: chemistry and ecology”, in russian), 2012, N12, p. 45-49, article “Viability of conditionally pathogenic and saprotroph microorganisms in the conditions of a stress”. and calculation in the calculating camera – in book “The general microbiology with technique of microbiological research” (in Russian). Editors are of A.S. Labinskaya, L.P. Blinkova, A.S. Eshchina, chapter 9 “Physiological and biochemical properties of microorganisms”.
