As far as I know, photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the application of light-sensitive compounds laser energy can be effective in the non-invasive ('semi-invasive' ?) treatment of lichen planus. The team from Medical University of Silesia leading by Professor Sieroń (Department of Internatl Medicine, Bytom) has a vast experience and good results in therapy of leukoplakia patches using PDT.
The best evidence available (Cochrane systematic review) points to steroids as first line of treatment. There is "weak evidence that aloe vera may reduce the pain of OLP and improve the clinical signs of disease compared to placebo" (copied and pasted from the paper). Also, there is only weak evidence regarding the benefit of ciclosporin. Nevertheless, there is a string recommendation in favor of using a clinical severity score and a participant-rated symptom score, in order to allow proper evaluation of drug response. Personally i like to use the score proposed by Dr. Woo from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod. 2005 Jun;99(6):696-703). It is simple, straightforward and not time consuming.
