Helix spacing to diameter ratio (S/D) is one of the determinant factors in the designation of helical piles failure mechanism and, consequently, the bearing capacity. In typical helical piles, where the helix diameter is not variable, determining the S/D ratio is not challenging. However, in conical (tapered) helical piles, it is a source of doubt. Although there are some suggestions in this regard, for instance, using an average of helix diameters in the calculation, this issue is not clear and well-documented.
