yes this sounds absurd at first sight but...

The vacuum pump removes the air from the mold so that the final component does not contain entrapped air in pores which upon release of the external load would expand and maybe destroy the pressed part. The pressure is a mechanical load exerted by the pistons. the pressure then only acts on the solids to be compacted. (You cannot put a vaccuum under pressure).

I have in my lab hot press and it works in vacuum simultaneously as press too at 2000˚C...

The mechanism is, you remove air from the pores, which prevents compaction and gives pressure to accelerate the sintering process.
