Light pollution is alteration of the natural quantity of light in the night environment due to the introduction of excess artificial light. It also consumes more power, contributing to society's overall energy need. The primary unit of measure in photometry is lumen (lm), which is a measure of light perceived by the human eye. It is different from the watt (W), which is a measure of electrical power used by the lamp. A lux (lx) is a unit of illumination equal to 1 lumen per square meter and the candela (cd) is the basic SI unit of luminous intensity.

Light pollution or photo pollution is generally categorized as:
a. Light trespass:
It occurs when unwanted light enters one's property, for instance, by shining over a neighbor's fence.
b. Over-illumination
Over-illumination is the excessive use of light.
c. Glare
Blinding glare describes effects such as that caused by staring into the Sun.
Disability glare describes effects such as being blinded by oncoming car lights, or light scattering in fog or in the eye.
Discomfort glare does not typically cause a dangerous situation in itself, though it is annoying and irritating at best.
d. Light clutter
Light clutter refers to excessive groupings of lights.
since all these categorizations are dependent on the intensity and strength of the light somehow, the unit should be "Candela" which is the unit of light intensity.
