In the literature it was mentioned that the tomato can grow better up to 3 dSm-1 EC level. Even in my study also it was confirmed. Now i am asking here i mean tomato workers on this aspect
The standard nutrient solution in Holland for hydroponically grown tomatoes with free drainage is 2.6 EC (mS/cm). The target EC in rockwool (near the roots) is 3.7 EC. A high EC can contribute to a good taste of the tomato fruits.
Tolerance of EC for tomato crop differs according to variety. While I was working in The Netherlands, the optimum EC was set at 2.5 while we went up to 7 as a salinity treatment. Of course the total and marketable yield were reduced and the quality increased. In Egypt, a local variety named Edkawy was tested and found to tolerate up to 12 dS/m but the quality of that variety in terms of fruit appearance was not marketable. So probably there are local variety in every country or region that has higher tolerance level. moreover, most of high tolerant varieties are not marketable.
It depsnd on the variety and also what is your target of experiment. Do you want to test the absolute tolerance level of tomato to salinity or the yield response curve?.
