As i know max absorbance of spectrophotometer that i use it has max value of 3 because there is relationship between absorbance and transmittance, and exceeding the maximum it gives faults values
that why I'm asking i have no idea if there more developed equipments nowadays.
It is possible to get culture densities in excess of 50 (OD600) but this generally requires a fermentor or bioreactor with really excellent aeration, mixing, pH control, glucose feed etc. In a typical flask with E. coli you might get to OD 2-3 and perhaps up to 10 with special media and baffled flasks. But note that the actual OD measurements are not very accurate above 1 (and certainly not above 1.5) so these OD values are determined after dilution of the culture and assume theoretical linearity.
