The leader should take charge and set an example for team members. Responsibilities for members should be clearly outlined. Everyone's contributions should be acknowledged. Periodic team meetings should be held so that everyone is reading off the same page and can report updates on the progress of their part. Leader should motivate those who may be falling behind, stuck or otherwise feeling overwhelmed. The leader should set an example by filling in for a member who may be sick or needs a little extra help. Finally any publications made out of the work should acknowledge all members who contributed to the project.

From my experience, I think that a team in which the leader does not show himself too much above everyone succeeds without any obstacle. Everything is humility, tolerance and mutual respect.

I try to explain my short statement.
Team building is usually a lengthy process, often multi-step. Frequently there is a person who is with you from "the very beginning". Moreover, if the first team members, i.e. its "core" appear gradually, naturally, then the team begins to live and attracts new members as a whole, and not just by the leader person. The most important thing in a team is psychological compatibility. You can forgive a mistake, a false idea, but if the team member stay a source of conflicts, quarrels, or even scandals, it is better to get rid him out as soon as possible (if team is not in polar expedition...). The main core that has arisen around the leader and the "big idea" may temporarily attract new members to solve specific problems. Sometimes these temporary members become permanent, and sometimes they leave, after the task for the solution of which they were engaged was solved. Most importantly, the team should not be "idle", it should be connected not only by the general idea or personality of the leader, but also by the current task. You cannot create a scientific team for joint nailing, as the task must be decent.
The wisdom of a manager is to create a balanced team with an idea generator, a critic, “workhorses”, etc. Same time you must understand the contribution and role of each member. Sometimes in the general resulting text, there is not a single word from one member of the team, but his presence is useful because he awakens the “creativity” of others. It is necessary to distinguish this case from the frank "parasitism" on the work of others. It depend on your task. If we are talking about a permanent team, then this is a really long way as I described. If you need a team to solve a specific and immediate problem - it is a different matter. You must always begin with "journeyman" (first lieutenant, if you are captain), i.e. with the choice of your "right hand". This is the most difficult thing.
