Energy Internet (EI) is a broad and composite concept that can be understood, to a certain extent, as a smart, responsive, decentralized network of energy and information. It centers on the integration of energy and internet technologies, and couples with large-scale renewable energy, distributed generation and energy storage to achieve smart and efficient energy consumption. EI is now being launched around the world, and the development of China's energy internet will be done in two stages. The first stage is from 2016 to 2018, when a batch of pilot and demonstration projects will be launched. And the second is from 2019 to 2025, when the EI industry system will be built to form an open and sharing EI environment. Based on what is going on in China's EIs, this talk will briefly introduce the policies and regulations, explore the technologies and innovation models, review the demonstrations and implementations, with respect to Energy Internet RD&D status and development trends in China. Multi-energy network whereby electricity, heating, cooling, gas and storage optimally interact with each other at various levels is the core framework and physical carrier of EI, wherein tight interactions have always taken place and are increasing due to its complex nonlinear stochastic characteristics and many degrees of uncertainty. This talk will also discuss how to use open-source, data-driven, systematic tools, models and platforms to simulate different constraints and targets with respect to environmental, economic and social costs, and to inform infrastructure planning, investment and policy-making in a bottom-up approach to deal with the challenges of EI development.
