I agree with Ravi, for the companies we work with, the basic benefit is a rapid turn round on concept modelling and design changes without the need to invest time, effort and money in conventional manufacturing processes. Small scale machines are now cheap enough for start-ups to invest in, as well as the ready access to relatively cheap commercial prototyping services, particularly for one offs. Your Clean energy link however will have no bearing. Unless you can run a particular machine from solar panels or a wind turbine only, the power for the machine comes from the mains and you have no guarantee where that was generated. What is more of an issue is the plastic used for the prototype. Were did it come from, is it single use, can it be recycled and what about the waste support matrix etc. That has a greater environmental impact.
