Chronic pancreatitis is a chronic inflammation of the pancreas that causes permanent organ damage. Recurrent or persistent abdominal pain is the commonnest presentation. The most frequent cause is alcohol misuse.
Recommendations by The role of endoscopy in patients with chronic pancreatitis. Gastrointest Endosc. 2006 Jun;63(7):933-7. Adler DG, Lichtenstein D, Baron TH, et.al. - Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) are useful for the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis (CP) and associated pancreatic ductal complications. (B)
- ERCP for the diagnosis of CP should be reserved for patients in who the diagnosis has not been established by noninvasive or less-invasive studies. (C)
In our center we never use ERCP in the diagnostic of chronic difuse pancreatitic disorders. We prefer MRCP (magnetic noninvasive radiologic diagnostic option) or better EUS guided pancreatic biopsy. But there are many options. (DD)
