As it is mostly subjective, from your experience what is the best risk of bias/quality tool do you use for systematic reviews of:
a. Clinical trials
b. Observational studies (cohort, cross-sectional, case-control)

Not going to say this is the best. But "Newcastle Ottowa" scale is wide-spreadly used to assess the quality of studies. I have used this scale in my study.

I would also recommend the Newcastle Ottawa Scale for observational studies, given the flexibility it allows. For clinical trials I would certainly recommend the Cochrane Rob tool version 1.0.

For observational studies I think the The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for assessing the quality of nonrandomised studies in meta-analyses.

For us, we use the Newcastle Ottawa rating scale for observational studies however we had to modify it so as to fit our goals (exposure and outcome)

Yes - its for non-ranomised studies of the effect of interventions - which might include observational studies such as cohort and case-control studies
