The simplicity of the geometry of the cavity flow makes the problem easy to code and apply boundary conditions and etc. Even though the problem looks simple in many ways, the flow in a cavity retains all the flow physics with counter rotating vortices appear at the corners of the cavity.

Actually, the 2D lid-driven cavity is much more a numerical test-case. Doing a physical experiment that reproduces exactly this case is not easy if not impossible. Some experiments reproduced the the flow in a duct with a cavity to mimic the lid-driven.

The study is performed to highlight the capability of a scheme in capturing separated regions in the corners for increasing Re number. Have also a look to the hystorical paper of Ghia & Ghia.

Thank you for the answers, I have read the paper by Ghia et al. My thesis is to model the effects of ASPECT ratio and Reynolds number in the cavity using ANSYS. I already submitted a literature review, in which I read Ghia et al as well as other papers. The problem I had is that none of the papers mention the fluid dynamics involved, they just benchmark various numerical methods, and I need to explain the fluid dynamics, of why more vortices form as aspect ratio increases, and how larger Reynolds effect the voices within the cavity, and I cannot find any papers on this topic.
