It has been reported(Fehon et al., Cell 1990) that Notch is not expressed (WB analysis) in S2 cells. This has been explained with a rearrangement of the locus that leads to an aberrant transcripts (personal communication in the same paper). Has anyone reported after that what exactly that rearrangement is and which part of Notch is expressed as as a result?
While both Notch and Delta mRNAs expressed in early-stage embryos are shorter than their counterparts in mid-stage embryos, mid-stage Notch mRNAs are more efficiently translated than early-stage Notch mRNAS, while the reverse is true for Delta mRNAs. What gives rise to these differences is the use of alternate 3' polyadenylation sites as well as different modes of 3' end-processing of these mRNAs.
