I am working on synthesis of forward osmosis membrane for desalination process. There are few papers available on NF like selective layer FO membrane. Distinguish between RO and NF membrane is depends on there MWCO and both membrane require selective layer for solute separation. Even though polyamide active layer has also used in NF membrane, whereas polyamide active layer has been using for RO membrane. Then, how can we distinguish between NF and RO?
Mostly, the difference between the polyamide layer of RO and NF membrane is the type of monomer used. As RO membrane generally requires higher cross-linking degree on its polyamide layer (for excelllent removal of NaCl), the preferable monomer is MPD instead of PIP which is typically used in NF membrane preparation. However, prolonging reaction time and higher concentration of PIP could also form dense layer like RO, but it produces much greater water transport resistance.
