you have to go a bit deeper into the data sheets

and have a look at

total power dissipation PD (i.e. the electrical power consumption ) and total radiant power Po;

conversion efficiency cveff has to be calculated by yourself:

cveff = Po/PD

However I am not so sure that I can really directly compare these two numbers because they seem to belong to different situations ("typical" vs. "absolute maximum").

E.g. in https://www.ushio.co.jp/en/products/product_file/file/SMBB940DS-1100-02.pdf it says

* PD = 3800 mW in the table labelled "absolute maximum" (there is also IF=1000mA in that table - does that mean 3800 mW are consumed at 1000 mA?)

and in another table:

* PO = 1300 mW "typical" at IF=1A and PO = 3100 mW "typical" at IF=3A

Is 1300 mW / 3800 mW = 34% the correct conclusion, or is the typical PO 1300 mW too low to compare it to the absolute maximum PD 3800 mW even at the same forward current?

You are right;

there are two different conditions:

Maximum rating for PD

and typical rating for PO.

I did not take these constraints into account, sorry...
