Distillery wastewater contains COD of 36,000 mg/L with chlorides having 11,000 mg/L. I am treating this wastewater using electro-chemical coagulation (ECC). But the sludge and foam production is more in ECC technology so, I am trying to bring down my wastewater concentration by diluting it with borewell water and later fed to ECC reactor. Please can anybody suggest me what dilution ratio can i use to treat distillery wastewater?
10 times dilution will be perfect in your case in order to keep high conductivity for diluted distillery wastewater and avoid adding supporting electrolyte.
The COD of a distillery effluent is normally 80000-90000 mg/L and BOD is 35000-50000 mg/L. However in your case COD is 36000mg/L Kindly check up the value again. Chlorides are normally 5000-8000mg/L whereas in your case it is 11000 mg/L
Anyways, Bensalah has said 10 times dilution should be okay. If you are not satisfied, you can go maximum up to 20 times.
Distillery effluent treatment scheme normally employ 2 stage anaerobic lagoons followed by 2 stage aerobic ponds, then followed by aerated lagoon and finally followed by oxidation pond is suggested. This can be good for land irrigation and the final effluent still needs some dilution. or some alternate options can be thought of. Huge biological treatment is necessary to treat the wastewater.
The COD of a distillery effluent (also called Vinasse) varies according to the nature of the raw material is normally 24,500-120,000 mg/L and BOD is 11,000-75000 mg/L, so your COD value is within the range reported by several authors, however in your case chlorides are hight value 11000 mg/L compared to that is reported in the literature and as Dr. K N Sheth (normally 5000-8000mg/L). Kindly check up the value again, remember that you can have interferences to determine Cl since the vinasses are complex wastewater. Thank you all for sharing the the answers. I will cross check again my COD and chlorides values and I try diluting it with 10% first and later with 20% if COD doesn't reduce.
10 times dilution of your wastewater is recommended as proposed by Dr. BenSalah. However you can use 20 times dilution without necessarily reduced the conductivity of your wastewater judging from amount of chloride contents. This will not only prevent the foaming but also reduced the chlorine gas evolution during the ECC, which may make your laboratory non-conducive (due to it irritating smelling) during the experiment.
