what is the difference of solvation behavior between non-ionic and ionic polymers/hydrogels in water? for example between poly NIPAM and poly (diethylaminoethylmethacrylate).
it is expected for ionic polymers to have high tendency to solvation for ionic polymers compared to nin-inonic ones (but polar, otherwise for hydrophobic polymers no solvation is expected). Of course other factors are to be considered such as molecular weight, concentration, ionic strength, degree of ionisation, and so on. Regards
Generally non-ionic hydrogels swell less and have lower water uptake compared to ionic hydrogels, nevertheless, the density of ionic group play an important role. Given the higher water interaction of ionic hydrogels with water they are generally better for cell adhesion and growth ( incase you are looking for biomedical application)
