I am applying for a postdoctoral fellowship that requires the following for their application:
Letter of motivation (please include the names of at least two FENS faculty members who are closest to your proposed area of research; you may collaborate with these individuals or they may mentor you during the fellowship)
Short description of your scientific field of interest and a research plan (max. two A4- size pages).
Any suggestions on how to write the motivation letter in this case and how it would be different from the cover letter?
The main purpose of a cover (motivational) letter is to persuade an HR specialist that you are the most suitable candidate for a given position. A cover letter technically refers to the accompanying letter you use when applying for a job, while a motivation letter is for applying to university or a non-paid position.

Hi, would say that a good motivational letter is almost a must, if there is possibility to provide one, when you apply to some job / scholar positions. If you apply to a position X, and they recommend you to express your motivation towards that position and you do not provide a motivational letter, what does it tell for the people who offer that position?
To me (if I would offer that position) it would sounds like, you are lucky shooting on all possible positions and not really motivated to get the one I’m / my company / my academic unit is offering for.
To make a letter to fit to that specific position is also really important. Basically to tailor and address the letter to them / to the position and to their company / academic unit and the specific matter you apply to, that is also important. To do it well, there are some guidelines you can follow, to write modern and efficient motivational letter, guidelines like these:
