I've read it somewhere that Science Citation Index Expanded , SCIE, is slightly better than Emerging Sources Citation Index, ESCI. This is because SCIE journals are annually evaluated for their impacts based on factors such as the reach of the published papers, citations e.t.c. while journals in ESCI do not have those evaluations (yet for journals that apply to be listed in SCIE). ESCI is where journals that apply for SCIE are listed while their evaluation is being done. So journals who want to be listed in SCIE will be in ESCI first before being approved to be in SCIE. But I think there are journals that didn't apply for SCIE but are still found in ESCI.
