What is the difference between subunit vaccine and ricombinant vaccine? Do these two phrases have same meaning or separate definitions ? Thank you for your help
subunit vaccine consists of purified protein only separated from the virus after killed of the virus by formaldehyde and then added lipid solvent to the viral solution and finally purification of the viral protein by different ways and used as a subunt viral vaccine...whereas recombinant vaccine prepared by integration of the interesting DNA segment that carries code for viral protective protein.. integrate this segment with bacterial or yeast DNA and after growth the of this micoorganism...viral protein will purify and used as vaccine.
Subunit vaccines, like inactivated whole-cell vaccines, do not contain live components of the pathogen. They differ from inactivated whole-cell vaccines, by containing only the antigenic parts of the pathogen. These parts are necessary to elicit a protective immune response. It could be recombinant or not.
Recombinant Vaccine: Vaccine generated using recombinant DNA technology is called recombinant vaccine. While there are various types of vaccines made possible by recombinant DNA technology, recombinant vaccines can be classified into two major categories, DNA vaccines these vaccines usually consist of synthetic DNA containing the gene that encodes the disease-agent protein. Usually, the plasmid DNA used as vaccine is propagated in bacteria such as E. coli and they are isolated and purified for injection, and recombinant (protein subunit) vaccines these are subunit vaccines containing only a fraction of the pathogenic organism, often time these are synthetic peptides that represent the protein component that induces an immune response. But they can also consist of protein subunits (antigens) expressed in a heterologous expression system (E. coli, yeast, insect etc.) using recombinant protein expression technologies.
In general, subunit vaccines can be purified or semipurified proteins derived from total parasites protein extracts, while recombinant vaccines are complete or parcial peptides, expreses or produced by using recombinant DNA technologies. Other type of vaccines can be prepared by using synthetic peptides, in this case there is no cloning process.
