I encountered a discussion loop somewhere (I just forgot the link) but it came into my inbox one time and i enjoyed reading it. The problem came to me when I was conducting a time series analysis of remittances payments and i made a forecasting model. I presented the results to my superior and there the problem came in. We were arguing the correct term to be used, is it prediction or forecast. I remember in the discussion i read that forecast involve a probability statement while a prediction is plane hunches of future events based on present circumstances.

Can anyone provide a more technical (but simple to understand) explanation of the two statistical terms.
