Continuous casting has the advantage of high recovery rate and is advantageous in mass production, but there are technical limitations in making the cross-sectional area large. It is not easy uniform solidification in large areas. This is advantageous for billets or slab castings with a smaller cross section than bloom. However, recently there are companies that continuously cast large blooms by controlling casting structure while controlling more precisely by computer analysis.

Ingot casting is advantageous in that it can be manufactured in various sizes. However, the shrink pipe formed at the hot top has to be removed, and the lower runner part is also removed, which is expensive because it has a low recovery rate to scrap.

And during solidification in the ingot case, the difference of the cooling rate between the surface and the core is large, sometimes causing cracks on the surface of the big ingot.

However, during casting and solidification, air bubbles or impurities have rising time, which gives you the advantage of a clean material.

Basically, in Ingot casting individual molds are filled with molten steel to produce steel ingots whereas, in Continuous casting molten metal is solidified into a "semifinished" billet, bloom, or slab for subsequent rolling in the finishing mills.

There are operational and technical differences well highlighted. But it can be said that one of the main factors is the diversity of composition that the traditional casting allows in comparison with the continuous. Conventional casting allows a greater range of alloys and special steels, as it is solidified in an ingot. The continuous casting requires a steel that can be deformed already in the solid phase, limiting its composition. Finally, we can see that the continuous casting, with regard to production, allows a much more efficient and homogeneous rhythm of the material, while the productivity of the conventional casting is more limited, as it demands space available for the solidification of each ingot.
