I do not understand why the shell equation is being applied and most importantly there is nothing spherical here so why should the shell equation even be pondered about?Please refer to the attachment and the highlighter portion.Also I do not understand why Na has to be suffixed with z+ delta z and stuff.Could we not simply write Na?
Well shell balance refers to any geometry, not only spherical. The flux must be established at a particular position, the variable is the same; the position is different.

you are performing a mass balance, not a flux balance. Flux balance will get you into trouble when having radial coordinates. Always balance mass or moles per unit time.
S represents the cross-sectional area of the tube (the area that is being crossed by the molecules moving)
