An innovation is about fulfilling the demand for unmet human needs, technical or social.; all innovations do pass certain economic stages of diffusion into society, from creative idea to practical application. Creative thinking is a heuristic procedure, while innovative thinking can follow known algorithms.

What is the difference between creative thinking and innovative thinking?

Creative thinking is an unconventional thinking that look at an issue from different perspectives e.g. think outside-the-box, outside-inward looking, lateral thinking etc.

Innovative thinking is a thinking that convert / commercialize a creative idea into practical application (usage).

Creativity is about unleashing the potential of the mind to conceive new ideas. Innovation, on the other hand , is about introducing change into relatively stable systems.

Creativity of more and is needed in arts, where innovative minds are need of technology. Each art is in original piece where technologies emerge from old.

b. Ends justify means

Creative thinking is the first step of innovative thinking and both reflect the mental ability to employ decision alternatives to achieve the best result.

I do not think these two terms can be strictly distinguished.

The innovator must also be creative in advansing (optimalisation) of completely original idea developed by "creative man". If the our innovator is creative enough he will be "the creative man" also :-))

Creativity also needs effort - sometimes it's quite hard work. Ideas for nothing are very rare.

Creativity is the mental and social process—fueled by conscious or unconscious insight—of generating ideas, concepts, and associations.

Innovation is the successful exploitation of new ideas: it is a profitable outcome of the creative process, which involves generating and applying in a specific context products, services, procedures, and processes that are desirable and viable.

Naturally, people who create and people who innovate can have different attributes and perspectives.

creativity is the ability to see things in a new way, encounter new fields and opportunities. innovative thinking has a larger time frame and includes adjusting the system. innovative thinking therefore includes creative thinking, but creative thinking can also be applied on current situations and problems and doesn't have to be innovative.

Creative thinking  is related to imagination and planning, but innovative thinking  is related to ‘implementation.

Having made a variety of films for the past 40 years, here are some of my thoughts on how these two concepts, creativity and innovation, have guided and driven my journey so far. And I will try to be very brief.

Creativity, at first, begins with any form of intervention to alter any one state into another. For example I have an idea which could be in the form of a word like 'lonely'. The act of altering it into a photographic image, a musical note, a piece of sculpture or even a computer application is basic creativity. I can then drive one step ahead into an empathetic mode and ask 'Can this be of some use to someone?'. Once it becomes a functional product with use-value, I receive some feedback and then I work on it again to create/ alter it into something else better.

Innovation on the other hand begins with the combination of 'empathy' and a functional system that is already available. Here, we notice that something is not working well and not reaching our desired expectations. All creative interventions seem to provide only 'Incremental' improvements. Such a situation calls for innovation. For example when the late Kurien took charge of the Kaira Milk Cooperative in Gujarat, his primary purpose was to secure refrigeration facilities so that milk distribution could be optimized and he set that up very well. After a while, Innovation came in when he could set up a powdered milk dairy plant and diversify a small milk producing project into the massive Amul complex that we witness today. Sounds simple but we all know the kind of vision that must have driven such a process.

Innovation thus begins when there is a higher value addition and provides a 'Transformational' experience. Some call it disruptive or 'out-of-the box' thinking process. Therefore creativity is a constant process in which we are all contributing into one way or another but innovation requires much more effort, cooperation and passion, all at the same time.

Creative thinking means thinking about new things or thinking in new ways. It is “thinking outside the box.” Often, creativity in this sense involves what is called lateral thinking, or the ability to perceive patterns that are not obvious...

Some people are naturally more creative than others, but creative thinking can be strengthened with practice. You can practice creative thinking by solving riddles, by becoming aware of and letting go of your assumptions, and through play—anything unstructured and relaxing. Even daydreaming can help...

Creative thinking drives us a step forward on human's knowledge map; (s)he is a garde opening a visible gate in human's perception.

Innovative thinking drives us a leap forward, sometimes, on human's knowledge map; (s)he is avant-garde innovating new (or opening invisible) gates in human's perception.

Creativity and innovative may be in some aspects are similar to my opinion from brain perspectives and both can lead to novel ideas and appreciation. In fact, implementation factor is the key difference between creative and innovative thoughts. An idea can be innovative or creative, or both. An idea itself can be innovative. At the same time there can be countless ideas that are creative, but not innovative. Creative ideas do not demand a formal approach around strategy and practicality whereas the Innovative ideas do.
