Word Origin
C16: via Latin from Greek sumposion, from sumpinein to drink together, from sum-syn- + pinein to drink
Collins English Dictionary - Complete & Unabridged 2012 Digital Edition
n.1580s, "account of a gathering or party," from Latin symposium"drinking party, symposium," from Greek symposion "convivial gathering of the educated" (related to sympotes "drinking companion"), from syn- "together" (see syn-) + posis "a drinking," from a stem of Aeolic ponen "to drink," cognate with Latin potare "to drink" (see potion). The sense of "meeting on some subject" is from 1784. Reflecting the Greek fondness for mixing wine and intellectual discussion, the modern sense is especially from the word being used as a title for one of Plato's dialogues. Thank you, Prof. Tabish. Just a small remark: "A Seminar is a form of academic instruction, either at a university or offered by a commercial or professional organization. .." It seems to me though that a seminar is very often a form of regular meetings of a local scientific community (mostly of small or medium size).
Seminar: academic discussion in level of department.
Conference or symposium: academic discussion between universities, countries. Conference is about multiple topics and maybe large area. Symposium is smaller area. It focuses on some chosen topics. Conference and symposium are seldom differentiated.
The concept of the seminar The seminar is a formal gathering in an academic framework where participants are experts in their specialties. They present their opinions and views on the subject of the symposium. The symposium can be considered a small conference, because the number of representatives or speakers is less. The symposium is followed by a discussion on the subject. Definition of the Conference
The conference is defined as a group of individuals, including a common thing, who meet to discuss issues of interest in their field, such as the meeting of 200 experts and university professors from different countries specialized in education to introduce the latest modern methods in the development of public education for four days. Through the information presented in the workshop, And practical exercises provided during it.
A workshop is a sort of intuitive preparing or hands on training where members complete various preparing exercises rather to listen to an address or presentation. Comprehensively, two sorts of workshops exist: A general workshop is there for a blended gathering of people, and a closed workshop is customized towards meeting the preparation needs of a particular group.
Seminar
A seminar is, by and large, a type of scholastic guideline, either at a scholarly establishment or offered by a business or expert association on some specific recent topic mostly. It has the capacity of uniting little gatherings for repeating a gathering, concentrating every time on some specific subject, in whom everybody presents, is asked for to effectively take an interest. It is generally casual, at any rate contrasted with the address arrangement of scholastic guideline.
Point wise difference for both can be read in detail on the following link.

The seminar has an educational significance while the conference is more about exchanging ideas and ideas on a subject of common interest. The concepts of workshop and conference is clear. The problem lies with seminar vs symposium. To me, symposium is much more in-house event whereas seminar can be in-house involving with all the internal people or inviting external ones as well

As a follow up question, does "consortium" have a place in this academic space? Or is this limited to other types of organization, such as government agencies?
