I am trying to model a frame in Ansys and I expected the fixed connection to allow me to model a moment frame. The fixed joint is set to restrict all rotations and displacements, despite this the moments are not transferred in the results as seen in "total shear moment diagram". Replacing the fixed joint with a spot weld shows a moment transmission that i have confirmed correct with manual calculations.
Why is the fixed joint not transferring moments despite restricting the rotation in all directions?
I am modelling a simple frame with two lines (beam elements) with an L shape.
1000mm tall and 1000 mm width. the based is fixed and there is only one joint that shows a different behavior weather spot weld or fixed joint.
Can somebody explain why despite the joint set to not allow rotations is not transferring moments?
Thanks a lot Claudio!, I understand your proposal and perhaps I was not clear enough with my final purpose. I posted this question cause I just could not understand the difference and it was intriguing me. What i am working on is a model for a complex Temple typology in Nepal. The wood structure is composed has many connections and some of them are not fixed or moment transfer joints lets say. Now I want to make a moment free connection, for this i can set up share typology and so far the only solution i have found is to use end releases. But I can only release one vertex at the time and in my structure a Pagoda with several roofs I have hundreds of joints! If you have any suggestion on how to practically make those moment free joints It will save me days of manual work and I will really thank you for that
Just how great this answer is! thanks a lot Claudio, I did test the end release yesterday as you suggested and is working perfectly! I was worried since i might have a hundred elements t apply this procedure but as you say an APDL snippet will do the trick. I use workbench and so I am not so familiar with Snippets but I can do basics.
Will it be possible for you to post an example to release all moments in a certain component name? I have classified the roof structure by component so they are already categorized.
