Dear scientists, I want to have a clear understanding about the difference between SCI and journal impact factors. Some institutions and scholars/researchers give prefer and more attention to publish in SCI indexed journals and some give emphasis for publishing their articles in journals having impact factors despite not SCI indexed. I am really interested to have clear idea about these two issues. So, can you please share me your own experiences. Thank you in advance for your positive responses. Only journals indexed in the Science Citation Index have an impact factor. The impact factor is a measura that considers how cited is a journal (which is a proxy for journal "quality"). Although this is not a perfect indicator, it is somewhat helpful.

I don't know in which scientific area you are working , but in many scientific areas the SCI indexing is a sign of seriousness and impact of the journal in question. Journals indexed by SCI are usually considered as better academic choices.
The interesting relationship is that .... WHEN a journal receives an impact factor (usually quite small .. at the beginning) .. it is almost "automatic" that it will be indexed by SCI, for the next available release of SCI indices.
A word of a caution here .. the impact factor is a "delicate issue" for judging academic performance .. and many things have been said in the ResearchGate Forums.

the impact factor is part of the World of Science which is the portal of several databases, one of these databases is the Journal Citation report that calculate the IF of journals of many science disciplines, using a two years-window of publication for the calculation. The IF was designed for the Science Citation Index that is also part of the World of science.
Journals that have an impact factor, are included in the Science citation index.
There are however, journals that have other influence factors , such as the SJR (Scientific journal ranking) of Scimago database that relies on Scopus data, or the CiteScore of Scopus. But when you refer to a journal impact factor, you are actually referring to a journal indexed in Science citation index.

These indices were drived from JCR (Journal Citation Report), consist of four quatiles i.e. Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4

When a journal is indexed in the SCI and SSCI, they (Clarivate Analytics, previously ISI Web of Science) give the journal an impact factor. Thus, only journals indexed in ISI Thompson Reuters (in the Master Journal list) have official impact factors. It is a somewhat common practice that journals that are not indexed in ISI, try to “estimate” an impact factor on their own. This is obviously not official and probably overrated.
