In the field of flame synthesis, precursor means the substance before chemical reaction. However, in the field of soot, precursor is used for the monomers like PAHs, aromers that nucleate towards soot, fullerene and other carbon materials.

Which understanding is right?

Or if I use precursor as the substance before chemical reaction, is the route from PAH to soot a nucleation or reaction process?
