We have a few foreline traps for vacuum pumps in the lab which do not have any information about the make and model. From my observation, it is not made of alumina balls. When I look inside with the light on the other side, there is a red color material, as you can see in the attached images.
(The wires you see are connected to the heater which is wrapped around it.)
Foreline Trap placed in the backing line of a diffusion pump or between a roughing pump and the vacuum system.
It is a container or double tape normally filled with activated alumina (or other absorbing material) to absorb oil or vapor that generated by rotary vacuum pumps. it assists to increases the vacuum by reducing the back streaming contamination of hydrocarbon or water vapor.
