What is the best way to look into the cross section of a thin film on a Cu substrate?

I have not tried it personally but you can use dip your sample into liquid nitrogen and break. This way, you would not modify (or damage) the cross section while cutting it. After that, you can use optical microscopes, SEM or AFM depending of the dimensions you are willing to have your images.
