I don't have a good basis upon which to express my data statistically. I would like to learn more about multivariate analysis. The courses that I attended during my graduate studies were very advanced since I did not have any statistics background at that time. I can't go back to school now, so I would be grateful if someone could guide me or suggest the best way to teach myself the basics of ecological analysis. Thanks.

I would suggest to listen basic statistic courses on coursera (coursera.org). And also there is very nicely written, easy to understand statistical book by Steve McKillup "Geostatistics explained: an introductory guide for life scientists" which includes the basics of both univariate and multivariate statistics.

Pick up a copy of "Multivariate Statistical Methods: A Primer, Third Edition" ( 9781584884149): Bryan F.J. Manly: Books.Primer for Multivariate Statistics. The book is concise and very readable for beginners. You can probably knock it off in one night.

When I start to study and use statistics, it was really difficult to understand very basic concepts such as variance and standard deviations, simple anova and linear regression. I think this is the problem for all with no good mathematical background. Unfortunately most of the great books listed above do not give full insights into that basics except the book I recommend above. Another book very useful in that way is Lymman Ott's book "An introduction to statistical methods and data analyses" with lots of examples and detailed explanations. thanks Sokratis, i appreciate your suggestion. i will check Matthiopoulos' book as well in my first reading semester. i kind like put a time frame of 2 years to improve my mathematical and statistical level of education. i am really going to check all the material listed above. i know the beginning will be little bit hard but i think it will change by time
The book "Analysis of Ecological Communities" by McCune and Grace is an excellent read for multivariate statistics. It's very approachable for someone who has not received formal multivariate statistics training.
In the words of Mont Python "now its time for something completely different"! Cartoon Introduction to Statistics by Grady Klein and Alan Dabney is certainly a great introduction to statistics and for sure the only statistics book to employ a cast of dragon-riding Vikings, lizard-throwing giants, and feuding aliens to guide you through your advancing statistical odyssey.
