What is the best way to functionalize a silicon or silicon nitride surface with silanol groups?

I am trying to convert a silicon surface (SiO2 under normal conditions if I understand correctly) or silicon nitride surface of an AFM probe to a silanol surface with as complete of silanol coverage as possible. How can this be done? Will the silanol surface be stable under standard conditions, or will extra precautions need to be taken to keep the surface in silanol form?
