We need to carry out Heavy metals analyses in some fruits using AAS machine. These fruits have been grind using mortal and pestle. We have found that many of them contained a lot of liquid. How do we carry out the acid digestion of these pasty, semi-liquid and liquid samples.
I imagine you will have to work out the moisture content of each ground sample and apply that factor to the samples you have weighed out for analysis. For example, a 500mg sample with 50% water is only 250 mg dry mass.
Fruits probably have a high sugar content, so adding acid might result in a lot of "spitting" and potential sample loss, so adding some water to the acid might be helpful to slow down the reaction. A closed tube digest (or a lid of some sort) might help too.
