I have completed my Ph.D. During Ph.D., I had worked on various aspects of the pathogenesis of Candida glabrata. However, in Post Doctoral studies, I want to work on immunological aspects for the fungal infection. I have only basic training for the same. Therefore, I want to know what could be the best way to approach a scientist, if you want to switch the field?
First to me I think it's nothing bad to explore new grounds after a PhD.. And I advise you to try.. It only depend if the project leader would be interested in absorbing you for the possition.. The best way is to first be sure there is an opening then strictly follow the lay down rules for the application.. Some PIs demand motivation letter or concept proposal that's where you need to work.. If you are exploring new feed you definitely need a mentor who's at least successful and can guide you.
First think why you want to get a postdoc....then choose the are you are passionate about....then collection of information regarding the work...and the required technical education...if you fit in that apply... sometimes you may not get your choices then you should see the position where you can fit....one thing common in these scenarios that open positions are mostly fixed...so try with your senior recommend....lab or PIs ...
Hey, I think its difficult to give a precise answer for your question but the at the same time, I think it depends somewhat on the lab you are approaching and if the PI is ready to accept the challenge to take post doc from different field (different subject) also the applicant show a real interest and ready to accept the challenge himself. In my point of view, first getting a basic experience in the field one want to work will definitely help, secondly relating previous work with the work you want to do in future lab can also help to make interviewer (PI) a decision on application. Suggesting some new idea to the PI in the lab you are applying can also be helpful, and in the last dnt loose the heart. I read your papers, they are really good and I believe you will get soon!

Dhirendra K. Singh It's good to know that you have read my papers and liked them. So far, I was working on Candida glabrata from the pathogenesis point of view, however, in my postdoc I want to explore the host angle especially immunological aspects against Candidiasis. I have basic training, however, no positive response so far. I hope your words come true and I will get a position soon.
In addition to previous comments, i will want to add that it is also very important you attend conferences and workshops in the related field of interest where you may meet potential host (PI) during interaction section.
