The web microscope is a good option

The webmicroscope is fine. Almost all viewers of digital slides bound to a scanner solution will be doing the job for you.

What slide formats are you using?

Thanks Ivan, I added two important details I forgot: 1) We currently use a 3DHistech scanner producing Mirax (.mrxs) files. 2) We need an online solution, so just a viewer isn't enough (or did you mean the server software offered by scanner manufacturers?).

Hi Mikael, we use Olympus NIS-SQL server system for online access to our histology slides database. It is easy to setup and viewable with any web browser. Compatibility with .mrxs slides may be specified by Olympus staff.

All files, regardless of scanner, are in fact pyramidal JP2000 or QTIFFS. So any software that is third party. For example our "Tissue Studio" will do that. You can use the server SW from 3D Histech quite successfuly. I had very nice experience with Zeiss Image Server but it was dedictated to .czi files.

If you have someone who can make interface to the image database (proprietary server) that will do the job.

You can use virtual slide library access option as well. Maybe we can talk in more details privately.

You can try also "Qpath" it is for free but has more simple analytics and viewer features.

Thanks Ivan, the viewer is great! Very nice open source software. But our problem is primarily on the server side. Are there any affordable options (regarding both software licensing costs and server hardware requirements) than can meet our needs?

Maybe you can just use the 3D Histech server option. 10 years ago it wa not so good and I have no idea how it is now.

If we speak of teaching studenst like using vitual slides for own training web based viewer will be fine. The same is valid for in class teaching.

The american veterinary pathology board uses virtual slide viewer based on Aperio virtual viewer. Of course it is dependent on the connection speed.

I will personally go to a slide database with user interface that activates a virtual viewer. That is like the link above. One can add annotations/descriptions and so on on the slide. That should be fine.

As I said. Maybe it is good to talk in person. Me being an employee in a image analytical company can try to find solutions. Though I have to know what you exactly want. Anyway you need a server to start with.

Because of the modest budget of some universities the best performance can be done by using internet microscopic slides, per example, a very good pathology database is Organ System Pathology https://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/ORGAN.html.

The students can easily understand the histopathological lesions when they observe the same lesions in their microscopes.

Thanks for the comment Fragiski, this is a good point. But in our case I'm specifically looking for real virtual microscopy server solutions.

How to build the protoype of microscope scanner for integrating it with virtual microscopy ? Do you have any references for this?
