You will require a probe-type sonicator. Consider the volume of the sample you will be sonicating when you buy the probe. The larger the sample volume, the wider the probe tip should be. You might consider getting a few different sized tips for different volumes.
Personally, I prefer the French Press. If there is one already available to you (it's way more expensive than a sonicator), it is better than sonication because it doesn't heat up the sample. It is easier to use if you get the Rapid-Fill kit (available from Glen Mills).
The Branson SFX250 seems to be the best for my department's needs, at least on paper. Does anyone have any experience with Branson sonicators in general or the SFX250 in particular?
