I have read some books on the subject but it seems to be as much art as science. Does anyone do literature meta-analyses regularly and have the best program to recommend to automate the steps somewhat? By "best" I mean best combination between high quality and user-friendly. Thanks.

As far as I know, depending on your topic and purpose, you may use Review Manager, Stata or R.

My friend Dirk Schröder has been in contact with researchers that have done some impressive work on this, and who are generally ignored by lit people, since it is too techie foir them. He'd probably be happy to share some of the insights gathered; I got to know him when net-literature looked like an interesting new form/genre: [email protected] ; since he is in the process of moving house he may be a bit busy right now ...but probably a gold mine for such information
