A photograph with a scale is always preferred in the field of forensics as it can help determine the exact dimensions of the various features in a photograph.
This is actually a problem, as most of the times photographs are taken while the person is sitting and it is not possible to put a scale along side the face. Second problem is that even if you placed the scale along side the face it must be exactly parallel with the plane of your camera or else you may end up with noisy data. There is a solution to this problem, you can take photographs of the person in lie down position means in a horizontal plane. In this posture a scale can be put near the face and you can also controls the distance of the camera from the face, which is an important factor.
My senior Dr Neelam did PhD on facial photographs in the Department of Anthropology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, you can consult her thesis. If you need we can discuss more on that.
