@ Asad, I think the best method to optimize soil fertility is to improve soil health through the use of legumes, green manures and cover crops, use of composts and animal manures, adoption of zero-tillage, and use of inorganic fertilizers where needed. More emphasis should be given to organic fertilizer, nano-fertilizer and customized fertilizer. To maintain soil fertility through topsoil conservation. To restore some of the lost plant nutrients that have been washed, blown, or leached out of topsoil, or that have been removed by repeated crop harvesting.

Inclusion of legumes, addition of organic matter, biofertilizers, avoiding monoculture, use of intercropping system, presided use of inputs and resources in order to optimise dose in right time and right place with accurate method so as to manage spatial and temporal variability in question, natural/organic farming practices, integrated nutrient management so as to substitute half of the dose of the inorganic fertilizers, sensible crop rotation (rotating crops of different habits like grasses followed by legumes, appropriate intercropping so as to ensure spatial and temporal annidation, avoiding indiscriminate use of fertilizers following soil testing etc are important ways to sustain soil fertility

I am not as sure that you, that farmers are interested in soil quality. They are interested in quantity of production how ever!

I am a Demeter Biodynamic producer and searcher, for me the soil ist the most important component of my work for making quality.

If you look at the litterature world wide, you will see that the organic part of soil is under 1%. IUn our wineyards we have 8.7%. If you increase worldwide the organic part from 1 to 2%, you will absorb more CO2 than 8 billion of humans are putting out with fossile energy in 1 year.

It is a paradigmshift happening in agriculture from the conventional chemical approach that has given us great yields but also degenerated our soil and decreased mineral density in our crops to an organic biological approach to regenerate soil. The key is to increase the soil organic matter (SOM) and increase diversity and intensity of microbes. This can be done most successfully through the combination of adding high quality compost and the use of high diversity covercrops and organic fertilisers. The balancing of the biological, chemical and physical quality of the soil is essential. The formation of microbial stable carbon happens most effectively through the symbiotic relationship between plant roots and microbes (microbes supplying the plant with minerals in exchange for root excudates). You can also search databases for regenerative agriculture to find new research on the topic. Other keywords might be Soil organic carbon (SOC), Soil Organic Matter (SOM)

Hoje temos que considerar de qual tipo de agricultura estamos nos referindo, se agricultura em larga escala (altamente mecanizada ou se agricultura familiar). Bom, nesse sentido, a agricultura de grande escala está repleta tecnologia disponível, como exemplos as máquinas que contem os sistemas de DGPS integrado e podendo determinar a produção e produtividade de cada m2 de solo. Nesse sentido, pode se tomar as decisões necessárias e localmente para ser fazer as correções químicas e físicas necessária em cada m2 de solo. Tem a questão da agricultura familiar, que em muitas condições não deixar a desejar a ninguém, quando bem condizida. Pois, se pode aplicar técnicas que muitas vezes foram desprezadas pelas culturas ditas "econômicas". Esse assunto, é muito longo e desperta muitas paixões...

Yes, very important the nutrient question. I have a research plot now in my PhD project (3years) where we increase SOM and diversity and intensity of microbes, through high quality compost, for 3 different generation wheat (Emmer, land race wheat and a modern variety) with controls. Then measuring soil nutrients in the topsoil and mineral composition in the harvested grain + DNA mapping of microbes in the root zone of the plants. We also analyze plant juice in the growing season. Funding short would have liked to have test plots on more locations.

The term of "Soil Tilth" - where are we with this? In former decades (I would say until the early 2000´s) this term was used often to describe a well settled, "ripe" compost, rich in nutrients and microorganisms. "Tilth" was favorably but not exclusively used to describe the target of organic farming practice. If you search publications, the term was used by all researchers. Whilst the use of "tilth" seems to ease understanding, is it maybe too complex? Sorry for just throwing out yet another question here: Do we know so many individual factors of good soil quality today that the term may not be specific enough anymore, or are there sub-categories of "good tilth"? In my opinion, application at the right time and in the right amount is the key.

There are many ways to improve the soil fertility. One of the major ways include: Application of organic nutrients, proper methods of inorganic nutrients ( the soil should be examine to determine the lost nutrients and then applied) proper farming practices should be employed such mix farming, crop rotation and the rest. Also the knowledge of improving soil quality should be given to people as most of the human practice make the soil to loose it's fertility.

The indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides has resulted in a decline in soil health and productivity over the last few decades.

Improving soil health and productivity is now critical for long-term crop production and natural resource conservation for future generations.

Organic manures, such as compost, green manure, FYM, and the cultivation of pulse crops in rotation with cereals, have been shown to improve soil fertility. However, it is expensive and requires more raw materials, which are out of reach for large-scale areas. As a result, combining organic and inorganic (INM) is one of the options for maintaining soil fertility and ensuring long-term crop production.

Minimum disturbance of soil. Application of green manure along with FYM and less focus on synthetic and chemical pesticides and herbicide. Plant based pesticides can be a good option. Soil cover with cover crops. Crop rotation with legume crop which can fix atmospheric nitrogen.

Application of integrated organic and inorganic nutrient sources along with minimum tillage and legume-based crop rotation system could be the best soil management practices to ensure long-term crop productivity in a sustainable manner.

Please refer text book my Daniel Hillel. Most of agricultural activities extract nutrients from the soil. Replenishing nutrients with organic and inorganic fertilizers is recommend.

Para mejorar u optimizar la calidad de los suelos , primero debemos mejorar las propiedades físicas del suelo con ayuda de la materia orgánica y arcillas coloidales como la bentonita y otras para aumentar el complejo arcillo-húmico y luego mejorar la actividad biológica del suelo con el uso de macroorganismos eficientes( complejo de hongos y bacterias y al ultimo completar la nutrición mineral de las plantas con fertilizantes sintéticos necesarios , pero en dosis mas reducidas, que ayuden a bajar costos.
