For Mg based materials, some materials can be etched using picric acid and then the grain boundaries appears clearly, but for some of them like pure Mg and Ca containing alloy, grain boudnaries are not etched and grains are not obvious. In the case of pure Mg, using optical microscopy I observed the grains have different colors showing the grains have been corroded, not grain boundaries. Definitely, the energy difference in matrix and boundaries should affect this phenomena.

I will appreciate if you let me know your idea to determine grains and grain boudnaries energy. because same concept can be used in corrosion behavior.

Best regards,
