What is the best method for preparation of probiotic feed (L. acidophilus 109 CFU/g) on broiler chickens?

I have done the isolation of lactic acid bacteria and also studied probiotic potential studies. I have selected Lactobacillus acidophilus and wanted to study its effect as probiotic in invivo trials (i.e. on broiler chickens).

My question is how to prepare probiotic L. acidophilus 109 CFU/g for the poultry feeding. In what procedure the cell of L. acidophilus should be mix with poultry feed to obtain 109 CFU/g.

Should I Lypholize the cells or just mix the dry cells to feed??

Several points of attention.

1; broilers grow better on pelleted than on meal feed, but probiotics may not survive pelleting

2. what is the difference between lyophylized and dry cells? Both are dry in my opinion but the moisture content might differ (slightly)

3. To obtain an even distribution of feed additives, use a premix of around 1 % of the prepared, containing the concentrated form of additive (so at least 10e11 cfu/g)

Hi Anila,

Lactobacillus acidophilus is not a spore forming bacteria. It is easier for spore forming probiotic bacteria to be pelleted and mixed with food in appropriate concentration without affecting their viability. But in your case probiotics administration with food (With appropriate dose) may not be a good idea. I would suggest you to orally gavage the probiotic with saline. In this way you can have better control over the probiotics dose and viability.

If you prepare the dry biomass of your organism and than that dry powder of organism mix with food and than given the dosage of organism to chicken.

Oral gavage is not animal friendly and impossible to carry out on large numbers of young chicks. So, not a way to test a probiotic in broilers.
